China/Shenzhen Visa Information
There is a 5-day visa on arrival (VOA) that nationals from many countries can apply for at the Shenzhen - Hong Kong border. This is a single-entry visa that is valid for either business or tourism, but you can ONLY visit Shenzhen and its surrounding area. This visa also cannot be extended and it cannot be changed to another type. Please note this if you are planning a longer stay in Shenzhen, wish to visit Hong Kong and return to Shenzhen, or plan to travel onward in mainland China (or your return flight includes a stopover in mainland China.)
You can get the VOA only at two land border crossings between Hong Kong and China: Luohu Port (罗湖口岸), and Huanggang Port (皇岗口岸). (Most people get this visa at the Luohu Port, because transportation links on both sides of the border is excellent here. You can take the MTR train from downtown Hong Kong to Lo Wu station, cross the border, then hop on the Shenzhen metro at Luohu station. ) Your passport must have 6 months of remaining validity and at least 1 blank page, and you must have with you the entry slip from your arrival Hong Kong. (you don't get stamp now, but a slip instead).
You CANNOT get this visa at the Shenzhen airport. This visa on arrival is only available at the two land crossings specified above.
Who is eligible?
Citizens from most European and developed countries can apply for the Shenzhen visa. This includes Australia, Canada, Germany, Korea, New Zealand, Poland, Romania, Spain, France, Sweden, Switzerland, the UK, and the US. (Note, Citizens of India and Pakistan are currently ineligible to apply for this visa.)
Nationals of Indonesia and Philippines can only obtain the visa on arrival if they had a Chinese visa before. The old passport must be shown as a proof of your previous travels.
